The switching costs are remarkably low.
How OpenAI Could Get This Right — But It's Hard
The advertising strategy doesn't inevitably have to backfire, but successful execution requires extraordinary care and restraint. Complete transparency is absolutely critical — users should always, unambiguously know when they're seeing a paid placement versus a genuine organic recommendation. Relevance is equally important — ads that actually help users solve their problems will be tolerated far better than generic, interruptive promotional content. And above all, restraint is essential — fewer, higher-quality ads will generate far more long-term goodwill than maximizing ad density for short-term revenue.
OpenAI should also seriously consider implementing strong user feedback mechanisms and demonstrate genuine willingness to adjust the ad experience based on real user reactions and satisfaction metrics, not just revenue and engagement numbers. The companies that build sustainable, successful advertising businesses over the long term are consistently the ones that treat user trust as their most valuable strategic asset rather than an obstacle to quarterly revenue targets.
The window for getting this right is genuinely narrow and closing. First impressions of ChatGPT's advertising experience will powerfully shape user attitudes and expectations for years to come. In the race between revenue growth and user trust, OpenAI simply cannot afford to get this wrong — because once trust is broken with an AI assistant, users don't come back.
